What Is a Swallowing Assessment? (And When Should Adults Get One?)

If you or a loved one has started coughing on drinks, avoiding certain foods, or finding meals harder to manage, a swallowing assessment might be the next important step. Swallowing difficulties (also known as dysphagia) can happen for many reasons, and they’re more common than most people realise — especially after health events like stroke or neurological conditions.

At Blackburn Speech & Paediatric Therapy, our speech pathologists support adults across Blackburn, Box Hill, Doncaster, and surrounding suburbs to eat and drink safely and confidently again.

What exactly is a swallowing assessment?

A swallowing assessment is a detailed, non-invasive evaluation of how safely and efficiently someone can swallow food and liquids. Speech pathologists are the specialists who assess and treat swallowing — not just speech!

During the assessment, we look at:

  • How the person chews, moves food around the mouth, and swallows
  • Whether liquids are going down “the wrong way”
  • How strong and coordinated the throat and tongue muscles are
  • Whether certain foods or textures are causing problems

Who might need one?

Adults often need a swallowing assessment when they experience:

  • Coughing or choking when eating or drinking
  • A feeling that food is “sticking” in the throat
  • Taking a very long time to chew
  • Unintentional weight loss or dehydration
  • Recurrent chest infections
  • Difficulty swallowing after a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, MS, head/neck surgery, or ageing-related weakness

If your elderly parent in Doncaster is coughing on their tea, or your partner with Parkinson’s is avoiding certain foods, it’s worth getting checked early. Swallowing issues can lead to aspiration pneumonia, so a timely assessment is important.

Why it matters

A swallowing assessment helps us understand what’s happening — and more importantly — how to make eating safer, easier, and more enjoyable again.

We can teach strategies, recommend safer food textures, and work closely with your GP or specialist as needed.
